Do you really want to know what you are dealing with, when it comes to raising children today? Have you considered the morality of America…where we came from, where we are at and where we are heading?
A Gallup poll was recently conducted on “Values & Beliefs” in America. The findings will help you better understand just what you are up against when it comes to the raising of your children.
This isn’t meant as a way to make judgments but simply to enlighten parents. And hopefully with this enlightenment, there will be conversations with your children about what you as a family believes and the values you wish to teach them.
Let’s start with birth control…89% believe it is morally acceptable, 8% say it is morally wrong.
Divorce…67% say it is morally acceptable and 25% believe it is morally wrong.
Gambling…64% believe it is morally acceptable and 31% don’t.
Premarital sex…59% think it is morally acceptable, while 38% say it isn’t.
Having a baby outside of marriage…54% of Americans say it is morally acceptable but 42% say it isn’t.
Abortion…38% believe it is morally acceptable. And 51% say it is not.
Pornography…31% of Americans say it is morally unacceptable and 64% say is morally wrong.
Adultery…just 7% believe it is morally acceptable and a whopping 89% believe it isn’t.
I wish I had statistics on these same behaviors from years past. But if I were to guess, 50 years ago the scale would weigh heavily on these all being morally wrong.
No matter what your personal standards are, we can’t deny the fact that morality in America has changed. So much more is accepted than it once was.
This means as parents we have a lot of challenges before us. We have greater ones than parents in previous generations have faced.
Never has it been more important to keep the lines of communication open with our children than today. Despite the culture we live in and the pressure from peers, we still have the ability to influence our children.
