Quick Tips for Decorating Your Bathroom

Your bathroom is a tricky room to decorate in your house. You need something streamlined, but also able to withstand high amounts of moisture and heat. Because most people use harsh chemicals when cleaning their bathrooms, you will want to decorate using durable materials that were built for frequent cleanings. Here are some quick and simple tips to help you decorate your bathroom.

The Floor
Always use a durable floormat that has rubber padding on the bottom. The rubber padding will help to ensure that you will not slip on the mat when you exit the shower wet. The durable composition will help to ensure that your wet feet will not deteriorate the fibers or manufacturing. Your floor mat should match your wall color, towels and shower curtain.

The Wall
If you paint your bathroom wall, choose a paint that will not peel under extremely moist conditions. Use several layers. Between layers, always make sure that the bottom layer has completely dried. If you paint on top of a damp or wet layer, you run the risk of creating bubbles that will interact with the bathroom moisture and ensure that your paint will peel.

If you are wallpapering your bathroom, also make sure that the wallpaper you use will withstand moisture. You will want to talk with a specialist if you have never wallpapered a bathroom before. Depending on the dampness of your space, you may even have to use special glues when installing the paper, as some glues will not completely dry in moist conditions.

The Shower
Your shower curtain should match the walls and the flooring to ensure a well-organized and planned bathroom space. The trick to making shower curtains work is frequently cleaning and de-mildewing them. The shower curtain should always be pulled closed when guests are visiting so that they will not have to stare into your dirty shower while they are in your bathroom.

The Sink
Your sink area, even if you use it on a daily basis, should be regularly cleaned and disinfected. You should neatly store items such as toothbrushes and soap so that they are not left out on the counter for all to see or use. Nicely scented candles and plants work well to decorate a sink but help it to retain its sense of balance and cleanliness. When you have guests in your home, it is always a good idea to have the candle lit so that any smells will be evacuated.

Lighting
You will have at least two forms of lighting in your bathroom: overhead lighting and sink lighting. Overhead lighting is usually a fluorescent bulb that illuminates the whole space and is especially helpful in the shower. Sink lighting generally is focused in the sink area around the mirror and helps you see your skin clearly. Sink lighting is usually a low Watt light bulb. Other forms of lighting that you may want to consider are small lamps (depending on the size of your space) and the elegant candle lighting, which is useful for helping guests navigate your bathroom and is relaxing when you want to take a hot bath.
