How to Save Money on Ebooks and Ereaders

free ereader The sale of ebooks has outshone the sale of traditional printed books. They are convenient and instant. Unfortunately, though you can’t just go to a used ebook sale and pick up armfuls of titles for just a few dollars as you might with paper books. Still, there are a number of ways to save on ebooks, including getting ebooks for free.

Let us start with the ereader itself. There are a number of choices available right now. My suggestion is to do your research and try them out in the store. Once you have made your selection, try these strategies to get a discount on the purchase:

  • Buy a refurbished ereader. These units have been returned to the store for one reason or another and cannot be resold as new. So they return to the company where they are checked and reset. You can save up to 30 percent on refurbished ereaders.
  • Buy a previous model. If you don’t need all of the bells and whistles of the latest ereader, consider downgrading your choice to a previous model. When new designs come out, the manufacturer usually discounts the old ones.
  • Note that I wouldn’t recommend buying a used ereader unless you know the seller personally. Unless the unit it properly deregistered, you won’t be able to add new books to it with your own account.

Now let’s talk about getting free ebooks. You can find a number of them just by searching for the word “free” and the name of your ereader plus the word “books.” So for example, you you had a Kindle, you can search for “free kindle books” and find a number of websites that will give you links. You can also go into the virtual store and check for books by searching from lowest price to highest. The free books will appear first.

Other ways to get free ebooks include borrowing them from the library, borrowing them from a friend (many books allow you to share them once or twice) or taking advantage of coupons and deals.
