Today is National Picnic Day. Picnic are so much fun, aren’t they? It is a nice way to spend an afternoon with family or for a romantic day out with your husband. As summer approaches picnics will become more popular and weather friendly. This is one celebration that does not have to include high fat or high sugar foods. Just keeping it simple and fresh is the way to plan your picnic. No need for high fat grilled burgers or hot dogs since you can substitute with low fat items, go vegetarian, or just keep it fresh using raw veggies and fruit as your main courses.
Fun Fresh Food for your Picnic
Watermelon: Healthy, fresh, and hydrating, this fruit is a given for summer picnics. It is sweet enough to be a dessert but healthy enough to eat a large portion.
Fruit Kabobs: Grab some skewers and add on pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, strawberries, and other fruit favorites and make some fun fruit skewers. These are always a hit. I was actually surprised how much everyone liked them the last time I brought some to a picnic.
Strawberry Salad: A fresh salad is a nice addition to a picnic. Start with spinach then add in slivered almonds, and sliced strawberries. You can add in other favorites to customize your salad.
Cheese and crackers: Instead of sandwiches try something lighter like crackers and cheese cubes. You can add in some turkey pepperoni for a protein. You can make this as simple or complicated as you wish.
Water Bottles: Ice cold water is refreshing enough to satisfy your thirst without desiring extra sugar. Bring along some lemons to flavor your water if you choose. Adding some cucumber or watermelon to your water will also give it flavor without unhealthy additives or fake sugars.
