Making your bed sounds like such a simple thing. It’s the new habit I’ve adopted and I have to tell you, it’s not the first time I’ve decided this was going to become a habit. Several times in the past I have decided to work on habits that will help my house stay cleaner.
The first day or two I jumped out of bed and made the bed. I was so proud. I found myself picking up the room and keeping it neater. What a bonus, I was actually motivated to be neater.
Then, I overslept, I jumped out of bed and hurriedly got ready for work, forgetting all about my new habit. When I came home from work there didn’t seem to be any point in making the bed because I was just going to get back in it.
The next day, I made the bed but I also decided that I needed to simplify if I was going to do this every morning.
I love blankets and pillows. Not necessarily to use, but to be surrounded by. I have a beautiful comforter that I made for my bed. It’s heavy, the backside of it is almost furry it’s so soft and the front has a beautiful pattern I love. I don’t sleep under that comforter, it’s 100 degrees here, I usually push it to the end of the bed, where it gets kicked to the floor and just cover up with a sheet.
There is also a beautiful quilt I found at the thrift store folded up on the end of my bed, that winds up on the floor as well. Then there are the pillows. I have four sleeping pillows on my bed and a multitude of pretty pillows, which also wind up on the floor.
Time to streamline. I have found that sometimes in my effort to make a room beautiful I also make it harder to keep beautiful. I packed the heavy comforter away. I chose a light throw blanket to go over the top sheet, its not so heavy that I have to shove it to the bottom of the bed. That pretty quilt? I folded that over the footboard of my bed so it won’t wind up on the floor.
I picked my favorite pretty pillow and stored the others away. I love having them on my bed but there are so many of them that I don’t make the bed. I would rather have my bed made then a room filled with pretty pillows on the floor.
If you streamline your chores you are more likely to do them. Housework is no fun but when we make it more work than it has to be then it rarely gets done.
