Backyard Beach Bash

left

If you can’t make it to beach for a summer bash, then bring the sun, sand and surf to your backyard.

If you are working on a budget, don’t fret. I am not suggesting that you build a wave pool and truck in a few tons of sand to recreate Waikiki Beach off your patio. Rather, consider the following simple ways to transform your backyard into a summer oasis that your friends and family will flock to in order to ride a wave of fun:

Decor: Bright summer flowers are a great way to add pops of color to tables. Consider placing a vase of multi-colored daisies in the center of each table. If you are going with a Hawaiian theme, stick with tropical flowers such as orchids, Bird of Paradise and Anthuriums. Arrange the blooms in large pots and place them strategically around the party area for added effect. For party hosts on a budget, skip the flowers and stick with fresh fruit. Fill vases or bowls with colorful fruit, including lemons, limes and oranges. Another option is to simply fill bowls with sand and place seashells in them along with a small candle or two. Don’t forget to set-up some beach umbrellas and chairs. Kids can sit on beach towels arranged on the grass or boogie boards that can double as pool toys.

Lighting: In addition to candles, you could also use strings of Christmas lights or Tiki torches to illuminate a beach-themed party. I am also a huge fan of paper lanterns and luminaries which can be made at home with just a few basic materials.

Activities: If your guests include children, then fill up a few kiddie pools with plenty of powder-soft sand, and then decorate them with sandcastle buckets, shovels and plastic cups. For added fun bury a variety of small plastic trinkets in the sand and tell your pint-sized guests that they are going on a treasure hunt. You can cheer them on as they dig in the sand for the goodies.
