While on a walk with my dog in a nearby town I discovered a doggie cafe. I thought that perhaps this establishment was a cafe that, if it didn’t cater to dogs, at least allowed owners to take their dogs inside. I knew this was unlikely, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to take a look inside. What I found, to my disappointment (but not to my surprise) was a pet supply store.
The reason it called itself a cafe was tucked into a side room. There, stretching along the entire back wall, was a bakery display case filled with cookies. They all looked good enough to eat and I could have done so, but I don’t think I would have liked them very much. The cookies were all baked fresh especially for dogs.
It’s not the first time I’ve heard of freshly-baked dog cookies. Although I love my dog I don’t tend to pamper her like that; she’d devour such expensive cookies in a heartbeat, and in all the things she’s consumed in her life she’s never indicated that she liked a special treat any more than the pieces of kibble she normally gets. Why spend the extra money?
However, many people do like to pamper their dogs in such a way; the pet industry is growing and gourmet food is part of that. Fox News rounded up a list of the top six most outrageous pet foods. They are as follows:
* Cake in a Jar for Dogs from Blissful Biscuits
The company specializes in homemade and vegetarian treats for dogs, but they also make an apple cake (still for dogs) that they’ll seal in a can and ship anywhere in the United States.
* Elegant Medleys Wild Salmon and Egg Soufflé with Garden Greens by Fancy Feast
I’m actually somewhat familiar with this one. We always fed my childhood cat wet food, and while we stuck to the normal stuff for fun I liked to peruse the types of Fancy Feasts available. They always come with names that sound like something I could order at an upscale restaurant, and this is the one Fox News finds the most faux-enticing.
* Cannoli by Annie’s Pooch Pops
Love your Italian desserts? So will your dogs, with this peanut butter and carob chip Italian-style specialty.
* Doggie Cupcakes by Sprinkles Cupcakes
This one is fun: Sprinkles Cupcakes is a gourmet cupcake chain that’s spreading across the country; most of what they sell is for people. They make a few varieties for dogs, which are sugar-free and topped with yogurt. If I was on a walk with my dog by one of these stores I’d totally stop and get each of us a cupcake.
* Ice Cream Scoops by Chewy’s Rawhide Shoppe
The name is misleading. The scoops are actually rawhides with chicken “sprinkles” in the shape of a scoop of ice cream. They’re plaque and tartar-reducing treats that merely come in a fun design; you’re not actually giving your dog anything close to ice cream.
* French Fries by Annie’s Pooch Pops
The list’s repeat offender, Annie’s Pooch Pops, also makes French Fries for dogs, and seasonally around the Fourth of July you can also buy themed hot dog and bacon cheeseburger treats.
Once in a while I might be inclined to purchase treats this fancy for my pets, though I tend not to because I don’t think they notice. Would you fork over the extra cash so your pets can dine gourmet?
