The washing machine breaks down in the middle of a stressful week. The dryer stops tumbling. The dishwasher starts leaking right before your major party. The refrigerator just isn’t big enough to feed your family or for entertaining. Your 40-year-old stove blows up. You need a new appliance. You need it now. You don’t want to spend a fortune.
The above scenarios have all happened to us within the last few years. So, you might say that we are getting pretty experienced at buying appliances. Learn from that experience with the following tips that will save you at least $200 on your next major appliance.
Find Out About Promotions
If you can time your purchase to the next major promotion, you can save at least $200 off of the regular price. Often, you can combine promotions with other promotions or with coupons. Ask the salesperson or manager who may be authorized to tell you when the cheapest time to buy an appliance happens to be.
Scratch and Dent
Sometimes you can’t wait until the next promotion or sale to replace an appliance. If you want it fast and you want it cheap, your best bet is to patronize an appliance scratch and dent store. At this store, you will find appliances that might have a small scratch or dent somewhere that makes it unable to be sold as new. The appliances carry the same warranty as the ones in the regular retail stores. I don’t know about your home, but in ours, the three kids (or their friends) are likely to scratch or dent our appliances anyway.
We saved $250 on a freezer that has a small dent in the back, which is never seen, since that side faces the wall anyway.
Opt for the Standard Color
Okay, so you just want to go in, get your appliance and be done. The easiest way to save $200 is to opt for the appliance in the standard color of white (or sometimes either white or black). Yes, the red washer and dryer set are gorgeous, but do you really want to pay a premium on an appliance that sits in your basement? Avoid stainless steel also, unless you are planning to sell your home in the next few months and are prepared to upgrade all of your appliances.
