Where to Put Your Kid’s Stuff

box

It’s almost back to school time here. To me, that means cleaning time! It’s time to find a place for objects that have been roaming free around the house and the garden all summer. If you’ve decided to keep an item but it doesn’t seem to have a home, here are some storage solutions for your children’s stuff.

We love baskets. I particularly love baskets on shelves. Baskets are easy to find at garage sales. Choose a deep basket that doesn’t tip over and cause toys to fall out. If you get baskets that fit a shelf, you can have pretty drawer-like baskets that extend all of the way up the shelf. This is a good solution for lightweight items that children want to play with regularly.

Treasure chests are quite possibly my favorite way to store children’s toys. Dump like items into the box, close it, and amazingly, your room is clean! Choose a flat-topped chest, and you have an instant seat or coffee table too. They’re great for dress ups. Did I mention that I love treasure chests?

Drawers are good for storing flatter similar items. We store Playmobil and Lego in ours. Our fancy drawers actually hold up our television set in the living room. They look fancy, but inside, they are messy and contain art supplies and toys. But when you close the drawers, no one knows. Shh!

Under bed drawers are another storage solution that I’d like to try. We have cats, and I need to clean under the bed regularly, so I’m a little more tentative about this one. However, if dust bunnies are not threatening to eat your home, you could try roll out under the bed drawers and use this unused space.

For some reason, the children’s rooms in our house have high closet shelves. These are perfect for storing items that don’t get used much, such as stuffed animals that my daughter loves but doesn’t play with. Just remember to wash or dust them sometimes, since these shelves get dusty!

Display shelves and cabinets are perfect for collections. They help your child organize a collection for display. I’m not big on visual clutter, so I try to keep these to a minimum. However, we do have a couple of small display areas.

Bookshelves are another item that can hold books and display objects as well. Use a tall bookshelf as a combination bookshelf, toy shelf, and display area at different levels.
