Baby Products You Probably Don’t Need (and the Less Expensive Options)

The excitement of a new baby can bring a surge of spending energy and plenty of advice on what you need in your home. Save yourself some time and some money by skipping over the following baby products that you probably don’t need.

Laundry

Expensive baby laundry detergent is not something that you really need. If you are concerned about laundry additives affecting your baby’s skin, you can choose any brand that is listed as “free.” It will contain no colors, perfumes or other additives, and you will save money, especially if you use coupons and aren’t brand loyal.

Brighteners and stain removers are some other laundry items that you probably don’t need. Laundry additives that promise to brighten clothes and remove stains can be great, although expensive. Instead, soak stained clothes in regular detergent or use a bit of enzymatic cleaner (such as oxyclean) for stains. To brighten (and soften clothes), use a capful of safe, inexpensive vinegar.

Diaper Genie, Diaper Champ or Other Diaper Containment Unit

If you ever go to a children’s resale shop, you will probably notice a slew of diaper containment units–those canisters that use special bags that twist and supposedly keep the diapers contained and odor free. The reason that there are probably so many of them is that they don’t really work. A better bet, invest in a box of scented mini bags that you can find in any dollar store or just use old plastic grocery bags. Dispose of the diapers as they are used to keep your home smelling nice.

Changing Table

While a changing table can be convenient because it gives you extra storage space, a changing pad that can be mounted to a regular dresser will save you money ad space in your home. After infancy, you’ll find yourself changing baby on the bed, the floor or where it is convenient, anyway. An inexpensive travel pad or a towel or blanket works well for this.
