You know how everything seems to happen in threes? It happened at my house this week. Three drinking glasses shattered or cracked mysteriously, as if they all suddenly decided that they were at the end of their useful life. That left us with only two glasses left, plus a sturdy mug we got as a freebie and several plastic cups that had just been put in the donation pile (my kids are now old enough to handle glass).
We eyed the two glasses warily. Would they suddenly decide to break, too? We couldn’t be sure. Plus, two glasses and one sturdy mug is not enough glasses for a family of five. I had purchased them only a couple of years ago from overstock.com, and while they came quickly, it was hard to judge quality of glassware from a photo and the brief description that was available online. It was time to get some new glassware. This time, we wanted to see and touch our selections before buying them.
I suggested that we hit the local Goodwill and pick some up, but my analytical husband wanted to make sure that we got ones were a slightly better quality than what we had. I guess the broken glasses spooked him a bit. Plus, argued the merits of having a matched set. Because of these reasons, we grabbed our 20 percent off coupons and headed over to the local bed and bath place and straight to the clearance section.
We found some glasses that we liked and had been marked down to about 50 cents a glass in sets of six. With the coupon, that meant that 12 glasses cost us only $5.40. Because we purchased them in Delaware, a sales-tax-free state, there was no tax added to the amount. That is a better deal than we could have gotten if we had purchased glassware second hand. Plus, they match, and they are quite sturdy.
