Fall La-La

left

Happy first day of fall!

Autumn officially began at 10:49 a.m. EDT, and boy, can we feel it in our neck of the woods.

The mercury is sitting at a chilly 39 degrees right now. If we had pumpkins on our porch, they’d be covered with frost.

Nothing like a good hard freeze to bid farewell to summer.

Despite today’s unusually cool temperatures, I love fall and all its beauty. Autumn is the perfect season to explore the great outdoors with your family and friends. What’s more, as the days shorten and the leaves begin to tumble, you are left with a plethora of natural materials that can be used to create cheap home decor.

The next time your kids complain of being bored, send them outside to collect leaves, nuts and branches. Then, spend an afternoon crafting these simple and affordable fall-themed projects:

Leaf Rubbings: This classic fall craft project is ideal for young children. All you need are some freshly fallen leaves, paper and crayons. Have your child place a leaf on a piece of construction paper with the veined side facing up. Next, have him put a piece of white tracing paper over the leaf and use a crayon to color the imprint of the leaf onto the sheet. You can hang the leaf rubbings on your window or make a collage, frame the finished product, and display it for years to come.

Leaf Stamps: For this project you will need fall leaves, acrylic paint and some butcher paper or plain brown or white paper bags. To start, pour different colored paint (you might consider using traditional fall colors, such as red, orange, brown and yellow) in plastic trays. Next, dip a leaf vein-side down into the paint, and then press it onto the paper or bag. Repeat the process using different colored paint and leaves of various shapes and sizes. You can create a pattern with the leaves, or stamp them randomly on the paper and bags to create an eye-popping seasonal gift wrap.
