Tis the season for coughing and sneezing. During this time of year we practically hold stock in tissue companies. Currently, half of my family is coughing, sniffling, and congested. We are a family that shares sinus issues so weather changes are problematic and often colds follow making for miserable times. My four year old currently has a sore throat, stuffy nose, and a fever. I always try to look to nature’s medicine cabinet first. I used to not be a big believer in natural remedies until I began taking them during my pregnancies. Ever since, I have incorporated more natural remedies for my whole family. My favorite natural remedy is honey. My two little girls love honey and I love that there is no worry about taking the wrong amount or side effects.
We use honey for sore throats and colds. I prefer to use raw local honey for the maximum amount of antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. You can simply mix one teaspoon raw honey and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Raw honey is not recommended for children under a year old. Take the honey mixture every few hours or so when you notice the onset of a cold or illness. You can mix it in warm milk, tea, or use it as a fruit dip. My little girls will take it straight. I often buy honey sticks from my local health food store as treats or during a cold. Often, I can find the honey sticks already mixed with cinnamon.
For relief from congestion and coughing, mix two to three drops of eucalyptus oil and one tablespoon olive oil. Then rub on the child’s back and chest a few times a day.
I know someone who lathers vapor rub on her kids’ feet and then puts socks on them before bed to bring nighttime relief from congestion. She swears by it and says she got the remedy from her grandmother.
If you can get your child to consume garlic then make a tea using garlic, lemon, and honey. I used this little remedy when I was sick and it worked wonders.
