You don’t have to spend a ton of money to have fun with kids. Sure, a trip to a fancy amusement park can be a real memory maker, but when it comes down to it, children relish simple moments with loved ones who shower them with attention and affection.
You can do that and more by taking your kids on an outdoor adventure. Make the most of fall’s gorgeous weather by trekking around the block, to a park, or on the trails of a local arboretum. Most young children have extra energy to burn, so keep them busy by having them collect colorful leaves which they can use to make the following project:
Leaf Collage
Materials:
Collection of various fall leaves
Poster board
Craft glue
Markers, crayons, and glitter
Directions:
During your nature walk, have the kids collect leaves in a paper bag. Encourage them to select a variety of different shapes and sizes. Also, take the time to talk about the colors you see and the sound the leaves make when you walk through them.
When your walk is over, head home and dump out your leaf collection.
Spread the leaves on the floor and choose the ones that you want featured in the collage.
Have your child decorate the poster board with crayons, markers and glitter.
Finally, once the background is complete, glue on the leaves, overlapping some. Or, you can simply allow your child to randomly place the leaves on the poster board as he sees fit.
If your fall weekend plans include a trip to the pumpkin patch, consider purchasing a few mini versions of the orange gourds and letting your children decorate them.
Rather than craving the small pumpkins, have your children embellish them with traditional markers or Do-a-Dot paint markers. Your kids will love making polka dotted pumpkins and you won’t have to deal with the mess of gutting the gourd.
Another no-fuss method of decorating pumpkins is to attach double-stick tape to strips of black, orange, white, green, brown or patterned ribbon. Once the tape is on the ribbon, have your kids wrap each piece around their mini pumpkins.
