Teaching Etiquette

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

In today’s world basic etiquette and common courtesy are not so basic or common. No matter how uncommon, the little niceties, are well appreciated by those on the receiving end. A young person who stands up straight, looks you in the eye, speaks kindly, and says the “magic” words is always a delight. She will stand apart through her sense of etiquette.

Etiquette implies a standard set of social expectations of behavior. Manners and etiquette are a way to show respect and love for others that will reflect the love we have for Christ. As parents, we are mentors and teachers; our children watch with a keen eye imitating the behavior we model. We teach manners, etiquette, and common courtesy, by making it common in our homes. Teach children to say “may I” “thank you”, “please”, “no thank you”, and “excuse me”. Reinforce this by using basic etiquette when speaking to your children. When a child feels loved and respected she will naturally manifest love and respect for others. If we are not intentionally teaching good manners we may unintentionally teach bad manners.

Manners to Master by 2nd Grade

*Friendly greeting

*Sharing

*Saying “thank you”, “please”, “you are welcome”, “may I”, “excuse me”, etc.

*Cleaning up after yourself

*Basic table manners

*Handling “no” graciously

*Saying sorry sincerely

*Being a guest

*Kindness to others

*Good hygiene

Teaching etiquette is not complex nor do you need a curriculum to teach it. Etiquette is taught by example. The first step is showing the proper etiquette to your children. Do not forget to say “please” and “thank you” to your children when you give a chore or ask them to pass the peas at the dinner table. The more they see good manners in action the more likely they will naturally gravitate toward treating others with respect.
