Gearing Up for Holiday Eating

For some, the thought of the holidays brings a sense of dread…hard to believe it is almost that time again. Then for others it brings a sense of cheer.

But like it or not, they will be here before you know it. How do I know? I am already seeing Christmas decorations. Wow, can’t we at least get through Halloween first?

So that means we will be faced with holiday eating temptations yet again. How did you manage last year? Did you hold up or did you buckle?

I think it’s important that when it comes to fitness, we not only think about the physical gear we need to wear—such as comfortable shoes. But we need to gear up for holiday eating.

Because let’s face it, no matter how much you try to avoid the temptations, they are everywhere. Your own holiday baking, neighbors dropping off a plate of cookies, co-workers bringing in their gooey treats. Family get-togethers…it goes on and on.

The reality is that between November and January, is when the most weight is packed on. So what can you do to prepare?

First, I think we need to have the mindset that moderation is better than deprivation. You are more likely to indulge when you deny yourself. But allowing for a treat here and there can at least bring some sort of satisfaction.

Second, plan ahead when you are going to be attending a holiday party. About an hour before you are supposed to be there, eat a healthy meal. This way your belly will be full or at least not completely empty, avoiding the temptation to overeat.

Third, when you are faced with several selections, don’t choose from every one. Pick two or three of your favorites. But mix in some healthy choices, like carrot sticks and a small amount of veggie dip.

Lastly, visit the buffet table just once. Whatever you put on your plate, that’s all you are going to have. If you eliminate extra trips, you prevent going overboard.

What other tips do you have when it comes to gearing up for holiday eating?
