Playing the Frequent Flyer Game

Years ago, I enrolled in multiple frequent flyer programs with the hope that I would accrue enough miles to earn free flights.  Nearly two decades later, I’ve scored roughly eight round-trip tickets at no charge thanks solely to miles earned by flying.  Not by staying at select hotels, purchasing meals at participating restaurants, or sending flowers to loved ones using a company affiliated with an airline’s loyalty program. I prefer to earn miles the old-fashioned way: by flying. There has been a growing trend among frequent flyer programs to reward travelers with miles if they patronize companies affiliated with an … Continue reading

Young Women: Virtue as a Value

Virtue was recently added as a value to the Young Women’s theme, as well as to the Personal Progress award. This value focuses on personal worthiness and purity. When it was introduced the Young Women’s president encouraged all women of the church both in Young Women’s and Relief Society to work towards completing the requirements to pass of the value. This would be especially helpful if you work with Young Women or if you have a young woman in your home. The scripture associated with this value is Proverbs 31:10: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is … Continue reading

Two Shopping Tales

Riversled’s post in the forum about shopping sure made me stop and think. The way she kept watching me,I’m sure last weekend one of the people in a large shop thought I was trying to shoplift.I guess it was because I kept glancing around me nervously. The reality was I was trying to buy a Christmas gift for Mick and make sure he didn’t see me. After shopping for family, we’d spilt up to go shopping for each other’s gifts. Knowing he was somewhere in the shopping complex, I was trying to keep an eye out and not get sprung … Continue reading

Adding Pizzazz to Ordinary Pork

In a previous blog I hinted that the price of food has affected my menu planning and some of you noted that you are in the same boat. One reader commented that pork is a lot cheaper than chicken in his neck of the woods. I was surprised by the comment and today I did some comparison shopping at my local market. Chicken is cheaper, but I only buy whole birds or breast meat in bulk. However, the price of pork (at least the cuts I looked at) was not exorbitantly high. While I wouldn’t consider buying more pork based … Continue reading

Questioning a Vendor’s Credibility

None of us likes to have our credibility called into question. In fact, this is one of the reasons that I stress the importance of operating your business with honesty and integrity. People may decide that they do not want to do business with you for a variety of reasons, but I think that some reasons are better than others. If someone things that you are dishonest or incapable of doing a decent job—that is quite different from deciding your prices are too high or that you just don’t offer the services they are looking for. As business owners, we … Continue reading

Is DRM-Free Music A Privacy Threat?

Recently I told you about the new iTunes Plus service that allows users to download protection-free (DRM-free) music selections from the iTunes store for a slightly higher price than standard music downloads. With DRM-free music downloads, sound is said to be of higher quality with less interference noise. DRM-free music can also be loaded onto other devices to play the the tracks, and the music can also be illegally shared over peer to peer networks. It was recently discovered, however, that these DRM-free tracks contain unencrypted details of the person originally purchasing the download, namely their name and e-mail address. … Continue reading

When Your Ethics and Your Income Collide

I live in a working class community where the majority of our population lives paycheck to paycheck. I was often invited into broken down trailer homes and subsidized housing facilities to do presentations for my direct sales business. As I set up my product display on the tattered coffee tables, it was quite clear that my hostesses and guests were struggling to make ends meet. I know…because I’ve been there. The products I sold for both of my direct sales businesses were what I would consider “luxury items”. I didn’t sell food, clothing or cookware. In fact, you could have … Continue reading

Psychological tactics of the media

The death by suicide of American mother Melinda Duckett has highlighted the increasingly intrusive and abusive nature of some members of the media. While scammers are often the target of so-called investigative journalists, and perhaps rightly so, in the past decade journalists appear to have dismissed the line between genuine newsworthy copy and outright voyeurism. And in the Duckett case, the media has inadvertently interfered with standard legal proceedings. The sad case of Melinda Duckett involves the disappearance of her two-year-old son Trenton, who Duckett reported as having been snatched from his crib. Renowned CNN prosecutorial interviewer Nancy Grace utilized … Continue reading

Hiring a Real Estate Agent – Part Two

Other things you should know when hiring a real estate agent are discussed in this second part of “Hiring a Real Estate Agent”. Have you sold houses in my particular area? Often times, agents will work in a particular geographical location so ensure you work with an agent that is knowledgeable about your area and its amenities. The more they know a specific location, the better they can sell it. What percentage of houses sold in the past year have been at asking price? This is especially important if you have a home and cannot afford to move much on … Continue reading
