A Brew For Your Best Friend

On the list of things that are very bad for your four legged best friend’s health, alcohol is near the top. You should never ever give your dog anything alcoholic to drink; even the tiniest bit can make your dog very sick.

If you’re looking for a safe way to share the camaraderie of a nice, cold beer with your family dog, you do have a few options.

Kwispelbier just debuted last week in the Netherlands. Named for kwispel — Dutch for a wagging tail — the beer is made from malt, just like human beer, and beef extract. In case that flavor combination appeals to you, Kwispelbier is fit for canine and human consumption. A brewery near the southern Dutch town of Zelhem brews the beer, created by a pet shop owner named Terrie Berenden.

Berenden was inspired to make the beer for her Weimaraners, who join her on an annual trip to Austria to hunt. If the human hunters deserved a beer at the end of the day, why not the canine hunters?

Happy Tail Ale comes from the Dog Star Brewing Company and is available throughout most of the United States. The creators wanted to give their pup a high quality treat that would satisfy his curiosity about human beer; this beer for dogs is made without alcohol and is non-carbonated. Like Kwispelbier, Happy Tail Ale is made from malted barley and beef extract, and is fortified with glucosamine (good for healthy joints) and vitamin E (good for skin and coats).

The Dog Star Brewing Company folks believe in giving superior food and beverages to canine family members. You can find their product in California (where the Happy Tail Ale is brewed) Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
