At the beginning of this year I shared a stray dog story that had a happy ending after my friends Christian and Christy ended up keeping the little pup that showed up on their lawn one morning. Today I’m happy to share a similar story about a cat.
Mr. Rocky Finds a Home
Earlier this month I wrote about unfaithful pets and a cat named Rocky a.k.a. Butters a.k.a. Mr. Kitty a.k.a. Pain in the A– who had adopted my friend Kim.
Kim’s dog Rusty wasn’t entirely happy about this pesky cat being persistent about getting her and her mom’s attention. (It was really Rusty who the cat took a shine to, much to poor Rusty’s chagrin.) But being the good dog she is, she was tolerant of the little boy cat who kept coming around, determined to be her brother.
Rusty wasn’t alone in not being thrilled about the cat’s presence. Kim had never fancied herself anything but a dog person. Yet, Rocky’s (that’s the name she’s decided to go with) wiggled himself into their lives nonetheless.
Cat Person Conversion
Having seen my two crazy cats convert non-cat people, I recognize that Rocky’s well on his way to wiggling himself into both Kim and Rusty’s hearts, too.
For one thing, Kim’s sending me regular updates about life with Rocky. Not only is she reading to him (catching him up on all the Harry Potters), she lets him snuggle in her lap on the couch and allowed him to sleep with her and Rusty in the bed.
One Cat at a Time
Kim’s made it clear that while she’s giving this cat a chance, Rocky is the exception to her rule. The only exception for now.
This stance was tested when she got home last Friday after work, a black cat ran across the parking lot, jumped into her car and gave her, as she put it, “a really stern look like ‘where have you been?’” before following her home.
When that happened, Rusty made it perfectly clear how she felt about cats trying to convert her mom. Rocky was going to be the only exception. Rusty chased the black one away!
Still, Rusty’s allowed Rocky to join the pack. That black one’s just going to have to give it some time. If it works on Kim and crew enough, it, too, may find itself a stray cat success story happy in a new home.
(Kim, if you read this don’t kill me. Just make sure that black cat never learns how to read so it doesn’t get any ideas from me!)
