That title seems so trite. After all, if kids and loads of money are involved there is little doubt that a divorce is going to be “ugly.” (Remember: Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s situation is extremely rare.) And why wouldn’t it be? You have two people fighting over the things that mean the most to them… or at least that mean the most to the person they want to see suffer the most.
Such is the current situation between actress Anne Heche and her estranged husband Coley Laffoon. According to news reports, the couple’s divorce fight has elevated and is getting down and dirty. Yesterday, court documents were released that revealed just how ugly this separation has become. The court filings state that Laffoon considers Heche a poor parent with “bizarre and delusional behavior.” Meanwhile, Heche claims her ex “resorted to lies” to get more money from her.
The allegations come after five years of marriage and the birth of their son Homer. The 5-year-old boy is now smack in the middle of all this ugliness as both parents are jockeying to get primary custody of him.
“Clearly, [Heche’s] anger toward me has clouded her ability to think rationally about what is in Homer’s best interest,” Laffoon’s wrote in his divorce papers. (By the way, in addition to asking for custody of Homer, Laffoon is also seeking $33,000 a month in support from Heche.)
Once the court documents were made public Heche’s PR people went into overdrive. They countered by releasing a statement saying Laffoon has “resorted to lies with the court because Anne would not cave in to his astronomical money demands” – including what Heche said was actually $45,000 in monthly support.
“For the past several years, the child’s father has refused to get a job in order to contribute financially to the child’s care,” says the statement.
Heche may be facing an uphill battle in court as she defends herself against Laffoon’s allegations regarding her mental health. Laffoon maintains that Heche “has at times exhibited mental instability.” The court papers cite as an example a time Heche called Laffoon from an airport sounding confused and not knowing where she was, then acting the next day as if nothing had happened. Sure, the allegations could be a bunch of mudslinging, which is a normal part of any divorce. The only problem (well, one of them anyway) is that Heche does have a history of mental illness. You’ll recall in 2001, shortly after she broke off a relationship with talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, Heche published an autobiography, “Call Me Crazy,” in which she detailed her struggles with mental illness.
You have to wonder if that book, which made Heche millions will now be used by Laffoon to milk millions from her?
