A Christmas Challenge

I want to challenge everyone in this wonderful community that we have here at Families.com. It’s a seasonal thing, based on Christmas, but I hope it will change the way each of us thinks not only about the holiday, but also about giving.

While our friends from other countries are certainly generous and not to be discounted, Americans are some of the most generous people in the world. We give billions annually to charity and relief efforts. I think it’s a beautiful reflection of the American spirit.

Unfortunately, despite so-called social programs and our generous spirit, there are still people in need. Many of us donate, especially during holidays or disasters, yet I hope that this year we can do even more.

I challenge each person that reads this to purchase just one less treat or gift this holiday season and donate the money that it would have cost to the cause of your choice. On the other hand, you could buy the item and donate it instead of taking it home or giving it to a family member or friend.

I’m not suggesting we begrudge our loved ones anything, but we all make at least some frivolous purchases, especially when we get into shopping mode. I’ve done so more often than I care to admit. This year, I’m going to take my own challenge and give even more to those who don’t have as much. Will you join me?

Christmas

Here are some painless suggestions:

  • Eat before shopping instead of dining out some of the time
  • Purchase one less toy to go into the pile our children will receive
  • Buy fewer candies, cookies, or other sweets (they’re fattening anyway!)
  • Choose a few less expensive items to give as gifts and donate the savings
  • Use decorations you already have and purchase fewer new ones
  • Ship packages early instead of having to pay for rush delivery

Christmas giving Salvation Army

*I also heard somewhere that pet lovers are being challenged to give their pets one less gift and instead donate the money to animal charities. I think it’s a great idea, but I tend to be concerned for people first, and then animals. Either way, I think we can do a lot of good. We don’t even have to give up much to do it.

I sit here and think about all the things a less fortunate family could purchase with the money spent on a Playstation3 or other extravagant items. I also think about how just a few dollars could mean the difference between eating or going hungry, between smiles and tears on Christmas morning, for people not as blessed as we are. It can also mean the difference between simply enjoying Christmas and giving joy for Christmas.

Just a few dollars can make a big difference, especially when many people give a bit more. Please let me know if you like this idea and if you’ll take me up on this challenge.
