After weeks of searching, researching, and wracking my brain I think I may have found it… the perfect Father’s Day gift for my beloved dad. It won’t hang from his neck or help him catch fish, but it may help him catch more zzz’s.
It’s called the Sonapillow and it’s supposed to help bring relief to people who snore. Yes, my dad is a snorer. At best snoring is annoying. At worst it can be a potentially serious health problem. I think my dad’s snoring falls somewhere in the middle. But he is not alone. Millions of Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a disorder that disrupts breathing while you’re sleeping… preventing air from reaching your lungs. The condition can be a nightmare when it gets to a point where it interferes with a good night’s sleep.
Enter the Sonapillow. It is a FDA certified pillow that guarantees the user will get a better night’s sleep. Which is exactly what my dad needs as he wakes up several times during the night. To say he experiences restless nights is an understatement. The Sonapillow is an unusually shaped, triangular pillow that is used by placing your face downward. This is an important position to maintain because according to doctors, the primary cause of sleep apnea is that the jaw moves back and causes an obstruction in the back of the throat. The pillow helps moves your jaw forward (thanks to gravity) and that stops the obstruction.
The pillow does come with some caveats. First, it is considered a good alternative for those suffering mild sleep apnea. If your apnea is severe you’ll most likely need a more aggressive form of treatment. Second, you should consult with your physician to see if it worth trying. I’m getting the pillow for my dad and he can talk to his doctor prior to using it. From the research I have done it seems like a great device and well worth trying.
A final note about sleep apnea: According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, more than 18 million Americans live with the condition, which can lead to severe health problems. Doctors say the sleep apnea has been proven to be associated with hypertension, stroke, and heart diseases.
I hope the Sonapillow goes over well as a Father’s Day gift. If my dad doesn’t think it is the perfect gift, perhaps my mom will.
