Ah, fall. I love fall, although here the crisp scent of fallen leaves is often replaced by the pounding sedative sound of the rain. But I enjoy both the leaves and the rain, and I like to celebrate fall with seasonal decorations.
Although Halloween is quite far away, we’ve pulled out our fall decorations with abandon. It was the fall equinox last Friday, so this gives us a free pass, right?
One of my favorite seasonal decoration is a wooden wreath. I purchased the wreath at a craft store some time ago, and I wound strands of artificial fall leaves around it. A friend just made a fall wreath out of a felted orange wool Argyle sweater, sewing it onto a Styrofoam base. Or how about a wreath that places gourds, apples, or dried corn as the feature? One of the best simple wreathes I’ve seen is the moss wreath: a wreath frame decorated with an abundance of green moss, with a few orange pumpkins nestled at its base. Simple is good, and highlighting the natural wonders of the fall picks up the spirit of the season for me.
I also have a weakness for hay bales and scarecrows. No, I’m nowhere around anywhere that actually uses them, but they’re fun, especially when the scarecrows are adorned with crows. Ok, so I’m hokey. That’s no crime, is it? Combined with fall mums, other fall plantings that spill out of containers, and a good number of pumpkins, you can make a display of fall abundance on your front porch.
If you have a window beside your porch, hang pressed leaves from the top of the window and let them dangle down, out of reach of small hands.
Add a dash of Halloween flair by bringing wrought iron lanterns and backdrops into the mix. Combine them with gourds of different colors and sizes, and add candles – not lit, but just for the warm look that they bring.
What do you do to create a festive fall display?
