A few Country Christmas Ideas

Do you like country decorating? It’s something people tend to love or hate. However, even those who don’t care for it when it comes to everyday décor may find that Country Christmas decorating adds a cozy feel and a sense of charm.

The key to country Christmas decorating, is keeping basic country décor guidelines in mind. That means it’s simple, comfortable, casual, warm, and there is nothing strict or stringent about it. You can use handmade decorations, rustic items, natural elements, antiques, and even the oldest of your ornaments and other holiday decorations. Don’t call them hand-me-downs, think of them as antiques.

Patchwork

Using scraps of Christmas fabric (or any fabric really) cut evenly sized squares and begin sewing them together. Place the patchwork piece against a solid piece of fabric and sew the two together, inside out, sewing only three sides. Turn it right side out and sew the open end closed. Now, you might be wondering about size. That depends on what you plan to do with patchwork items. You can make a tree skirt, a table runner, place mats, pillow covers, a throw, and a variety of other items. Use tiny squares and create patchwork covers for your potholders.

*Make your own Christmas stockings or dress up old ones by adding patches at the toe and heal. Cute.

Flannel

Don’t sew? That’s cool. Try adding some touches of flannel in place of many of the above items. Cut to size and shape, fold the edges over, and press firmly so rough edges are hidden.

Pinecones

Nearly anything natural has a place in country Christmas decorating. Pile up the pinecones or gather up a simple bunch of twigs to tie with ribbon. Baskets are essential and while most any basket will do, the less constructed, handmade looking, rustic styles are the best. Pine boughs are great too.

Lace

From handmade doilies (or those that look handmade) to Battenberg curtains, you can add great charm to holiday decorating with lace. Small doilies can be starched and hung from ribbon to make cute country ornaments.
