January 1st, our opportunity to make a fresh start, in any area of our life that we choose. I’ve made some resolutions but more than resolutions I’ve tried to look at different areas of my life and decide what I want things to look like going through 2012 and beyond.
I spend a lot of time stressed out about the cleanliness of my house. When I was younger I had a housecleaning business for about eight years, I know the difference between surface clean and really clean. Usually my house is surface clean, most people who come in would think it was really clean, I’m good at faking it. The clutter is kept to a minimum, counters are clean and beds are made. It looks clean.
However, I know that if you look closely you will see that the baseboards and bookshelves need to be dusted, the edges of the carpet need vacuuming and that neatly made bed, it’s just a comforter pulled up quickly. Does this matter? When I die are people going to gossip about how my house only looked clean? I don’t think so but if they do, what the heck, I’ll be dead!
So this year I’ve decided that when it comes to my house, clean enough is good enough. That doesn’t mean I won’t still scrub and organize it just means I’m taking the pressure off myself to have a perfectly clean home. I like a clean house, it’s one of my favorite things, but if I don’t have time to keep it spotlessly clean I’m not going to beat myself up over it.
For 2012, my house will be clean and comfortable. I will not be a slave to cleanliness standards that add absolutely no value to my life. I will enjoy my home instead of looking around and seeing what needs to be done. Most of all, I will relax and spend time doing the things I love instead of the things I feel obligated to do.
Now I’m off, I’m going to clean the bathroom, I should at least start the year with a spotlessly clean house.
