A Fun Breakfast with Horton Hears a Who

We had breakfast today at the International House of Pancakes. We haven’t seen the new “Horton Hears a Who” movie yet, but the marketers are doing their job. My ten year olds knew all about the special menu at IHOP featuring green eggs and ham, a drink called a Beezlenut Splash, and Who-Cakes. They passed on the green eggs. Since the eggs are made with creamed spinach, I could hardly blame them.

The Who-Cakes came in graduated stack of five cakes, secured together with a pink lollipop stuck through their middles. Blue and pink glazed icing ran over the top and down their sides. Then the huge stack of pancakes was sprinkled with tiny candy coated chocolate bits. It was a very festive looking breakfast – think birthday cake. I don’t even want to know how much sugar was in their breakfast.

And for a little extra sugar, to drink they had the Beezlenut Splash. It does look like something out of Dr. Seuss. It is really Sierra Mist, served in a clear glass with cubes of blue and red jello mixed in with the ice. It’s bizarre looking. I’d thought they would drink the soda then scoop out the jello with a spoon. The jello actually gradually dissolved though, so that colored bits ran up the straws. It was very weird looking. My boys got a real kick out of that.

This is not a normal breakfast, but it was fun. I think we can easily copy the idea with a somewhat healthier stack of pancakes. And the drink definitely has fun possibilities for school parties and for sick days. Jello comes in a lot of fun colors to match holidays. And it’s always nice to have an extra trick or two with liquids on sick days.
