I remember when a celebrity would make headlines for doing some type of charitable work. Nowadays it seems aiding the less fortunate is the “in” thing to do. Everyone from Eminem and Hootie and Blowfish to megawatt couple Brangelina and “Desperate Housewives’” Eva Longoria are lending their names (and Brangelina’s case, their own money) to charitable foundations. It’s gotten to the point where organizations are looking for creative ways to merge the celebrity and the cause. Such is the case with the Relix Bands.
Relix Bands are crafted by Azu Studios from the used guitar strings of more than 50 charity-minded rockers such as John Mayer, Adam Levine, and Ben Harper. That’s right, the very strings the musicians strum before thousands of adoring fans are donated, then shaped into thick bracelets, and held together with a sterling silver band. The bracelets retail for $150; with proceeds going to several charitable groups, including campaigns that address hunger relief, education, voter registration, and anti-poverty. You can also customize your bracelet by picking your favorite artist’s strings (Carlos Santana, Keith Richards) and adding on “extras,” including pearls, gold or precious stones.
In other celebrity charity news, Oprah, Rosie O’Donnell, and Brangelina can welcome actor Denzel Washington to their “millionaires club” (which is made up of celebrities who have donated a lump sum of a million dollars or more to a single charity). News reports say Washington recently donated $1 million to Save Africa’s Children.
The charity works to raise awareness and provide direct support through shelter, education and health care for the 17 million orphans across the continent. According to the charity’s president, Washington’s donation will help to support 300 new orphan care projects, bringing the number of projects up to more than 600.
