Chains saws can be very useful things to buy or even share with neighbors or family. A chain saw can help make short work of cutting firewood, removing branches or even cutting down trees. We own a wooded property, so our chain saw has really earned its keep.
One thing that you should know about chain saws is that the cutting blades will need to be sharpened frequently. How often depends on how you care for them (never place them in the dirt or cut through to the ground) and how much you use them. It is often helpful to have two or three chains for your saw, so you can switch them out as needed.
Buying a used chain saw can save you money, but keep in mind that newer models tend to be easier to use and safer than older models. They can be lighter weight, more powerful, easier to start and more comfortable to use.
When considering a chain saw, first take a look at what your needs are. You don’t want to buy a chain saw that is the wrong size or power for the majority of the jobs you will be doing.
Larger saws can be difficult to maneuver and will weight more, so make sure that you need a large saw before you choose one. Next, take a look at how much power you need. It is usually good to get a little extra power if you are unsure. Cutting with too little power or cutting capability can actually be dangerous. Power and size don’t necessarily go hand in hand. You can have a powerful chain saw that is relatively small.
You can choose between a gas powered or an electric chain saw. Gas power will give you more flexibility because you won’t be tied to a cord, nor will you be in danger of accidentally cutting the cord.
