Mums are here. There is no other flower that really makes me think of the fall season. The colors of rusty orange, golden yellows and even green really stand out in the warm light of autumn. There are so many different types of mums. Which ones are right for your decorating? Here is a guide.
When looking for mums, it is always exciting to seek out unusual ones with special shapes and colors. But if you are working with your local home improvement store or small nursery, you might be limited in your choices. There are four types of mums that are the most common types.
Button Mum
A button mum is not what we usually expect in a mum because it is petite in size. You can use button mums to fill in a bouquet that features other types of mums. The flowers are dome shaped and full with very tightly packed petals. They will add a nice contrast to the next type.
Decorative Mum
This is probably the one we usually think of when we think of a mum. These mums are large and really show off. They have the traditional mum shape. The decorative mum is also known as the the football mum, because it is often used as a corsage at football games.
Spider Mum
The spider mum features unusual spidery petals. Instead of being flat, the petals are long and tubular. These mums will give your decorating an exotic touch.
Single Mum
A single mum can be deceiving because, well, it doesn’t look like a mum. Instead, the single mum looks very much like a daisy. Its petals are in a row around a center disk. You can use single mums to fill in large bouquets and add some contrast.
Will you be decorating with mums this season?
