A Homemaker’s Christmas

What is a homemaker? A homemaker is not male or female, young or old. A homemaker is a person who builds a house into a home. Helping someone find the tools and skills to create a home is a wonderful gift. How can you share the homemaking love this Christmas?

Give Inspiration

I’m giving out a lot of homemaking inspiration this year in the form of jams, cookies, and canned fruit. I love to share what I’ve made, and sometimes it inspires others to do the same.

Give Family Recipes

I’ve done this a couple of times, and I’ve also received this once. Every time, family recipes were deeply appreciated. When I moved out of the house, I wrote our beloved recipes into my new recipe book. I’ve done it for those in our family who have gotten married as well. When I got married, I received the wonderful gift of my grandmother’s old box of recipe cards. Write down some family recipes, and you’ll carry traditions through the generations.

Teach Skills

Homemakers need skills in cooking, carpentry, and many, many other skills. You might be able to share a few with a friend or family member. How does a homemade pasta-making class sound? Or knitting lessons?

Give a Homemade Gift

For someone who’s moving out of the house, getting married, or having a baby (or just because!), create a homemade gift that will last. Sew a quilt, crochet an afghan, or give a refurbished piece of furniture. These are the things that make homes special.

Give a Membership

Tools of the trade can be expensive, no matter what trade you’re in. Give a membership to a tool library or a rental place, or give a membership to a recreation center that allows its members to use the equipment. For example, if you’re a new potter, you may be able to borrow the wheel at the recreation center rather than buying your own.
Give Starter Packs

What do you want to learn next year? Many of us are relearning old skills, and these skills come with a need for supplies. Give canning supplies, seeds and plants, yarn and needles, and a good book to go with them.
