When I was younger I desperately wanted to be a baseball player. My father I think had secretly wanted a son, and would take me out on weekend to watch our local minor league team play. Something about baseball has always appealed to me, and to this day I anxiously await baseballs return and a chance to head out to the ballpark on a summer afternoon.
It is no surprise that one of my favorite movies growing up was “A League of their Own”. The movie is about the start of the first woman’s baseball team. The team was started up in World War II when many of the male players were serving in the war.
Stars in the film include Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and Geena Davis who was nominated for best actress for her work in the film. This is a great movie not only for its story, but for the historical aspects of the film. The film itself was based on real events, so while you are being entertained you are learning a little bit of American history and what it was like to be a woman and an America n citizen during World War II.
The movie is rated PG and is probably one you should preview before watching it with your children if you haven’t seen it already. While for the most part the film is family friendly there are a few moments that tackle adult situations you may or may not want your children exposed to.
A League of Their own runs two hours and eight minutes and is available where DVDs are sold as well as online at Amazon.com
