I got the funniest email from a reader the other day regarding my blog on Mother’s Day gift ideas. In the post I listed a few photo accessories I thought would make affordable presents for a mother/photographer. The reader didn’t take aim at my choice in items, but he did have a problem with their prices (all the gifts were under $50). He noted: “Isn’t mom worth more than a $20 beaded camera neck strap?”
Frankly, I found his remark quite funny.
Do I think moms are worth more than 20 bucks?
Absolutely. Definitely. Without a doubt. Of course. Hel… I mean heck yeah.
So we’re clear on how I feel about mom’s worth, right?
Did I mention I am a mom?
Okay, so for all of you Mother’s Day gift buyers who are working without budget constraints this blog’s for you.
The following is a list of some of the most popular digital cameras on the market. I can’t imagine a mom out there who would not scream with glee if she received one of the following on Mother’s Day. Warning: They don’t come cheap. Oh, and I have no doubt that any one of them would look amazing hanging from a beaded neck strap.
ULTRA COMPACT
The Sony DSC T2 has 4GB of built-in memory, which is incredible for such a small (and lightweight) camera. With that much storage built in your mom would probably never need a memory card for this camera. Another bonus for mom, the camera is small enough to fit in her tiniest tote. (It can actually be stored in a shirt pocket.) I also like that it has face and smile detection and sells for just $350.
POWER ZOOM
For even less money than the Sony DSC T2 you can give mom the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3-K. This camera is known for its monster 10x optical zoom lens and a generous 28mm wide-angle setting. The features are ideal for the soccer mom who documents all of her kids’ games with her camera. For $250 you are also getting a camera that has very little lag time (that frustrating moment between the time you press the shutter button and when the camera actually snaps the shot).
GO PRO
I have reviewed the Nikon D80 in previous blogs and maintain that it really is the one of the best digital cameras on the market today regardless of your skill level. It is an expensive camera, but you get what you pay for. Not only does it offer almost every option and menu feature you can image, but it also takes pictures very quickly and its 10-megapixel resolution is unbeatable for its $850 price tag.
CASUAL PHOTOGRAPHER
If your mom is not a camera buff but enjoys snapping shots of her kids or grandkids consider getting her the Canon PowerShot A570. This camera is perfect for the casual photographer who doesn’t want to worry about toting around an expensive device that comes equipped with features she will never use. I also like that the camera uses standard AA batteries, so you never have to stop shooting to charge up. And for $165 it’s practically a steal.
