A New Twist on Hotel Chocolates

Gone are the days when you would be left a single piece of simple chocolate on your hotel room pillow…

With the rising price of hotel rooms these days you wouldn’t think that properties would be looking to branch out in an effort to make more dough… but you’d be wrong.

If you have ever been in a situation where you were left scurrying around at the last minute trying to find gifts to take home from vacation then you will be able to appreciate what one California hotel chain is offering its guests.

Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, California and its sister properties–Casa del Mar in Santa Monica and the Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara—–are now offering guests the chance to take home award-winning chocolates designed especially for the properties.

You can choose from the Shutters’ bar made from milk chocolate with a touch of sea salt and smoked almonds. (The hotel is located on a beach, hence the hint of sea salt.) Or if you are staying at the more formal European Casa del Mar hotel you can choose to take home dark chocolate, paprika, salt and roast Spanish almonds for your friends and family. Finally, if you are staying at the Canary, a boutique hotel in downtown Santa Barbara due to open in February you will be offered a milk chocolate and plantain chip creation. Boxed sets of the treats are available at all the properties.

I have one more bit of sweet hotel news to share with travelers bound for New York during the month of February. The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Bark is catering to the needs of its chocoholic guests with its “Chocolate Bar” dessert buffet. The decadent dining option is offered on Friday and Saturday nights from February 1st to March 1st. For $75 per person you’ll get the chance to indulge in two-dozen chocolate temptations, from chocolate amaretto crème caramel, to chocolate peanut butter cup with apricot sauce, to toffee chocolate molten cake with banana walnut ice cream. There’s even chocolate apricot Jell-o and unlimited Champagne.

If you’re looking for a place to take your sweetie on Valentine’s Day I would make reservations immediately. I have a feeling a lot of guys will be ditching the traditional gift of a box of chocolates in favor of this choco-treat.
