A Pill, Shoes and a Shake

Fitness has become an enterprise that is filled with empty promises or downright deception. I cringe when I hear things like “miracle pill.” It scares me to think of what we could be doing to our bodies when we ingest something that we have no idea what it’s made of or how it could interfere with our body’s functioning.

Anything that claims to be able to do something out of the ordinary should be avoided. Lose weight by taking this pill. Lose weight by wearing these shoes. Lose weight by drinking this shake. We have to be careful that we don’t fall for scams that are meant to only take the money from our pocketbooks.

Fitness requires work. If you don’t have to do anything to become fit, then something is wrong. Fitness requires time. If you can become fit in just a few days then something is wrong. Fitness is more than just losing weight quickly. It’s about developing a healthier lifestyle.

There are some basic principles behind becoming fit. First, you really can’t just eat what you want. Studies have shown that the best way to eat is several, smaller portions throughout the day. These should be healthy choices like fruits and vegetables. A small portion of chips and dip doesn’t count.

Second, you need to exercise. Even if you just walk everyday, you are doing something healthy for your body. If you can lift weights, join a club or take an aerobics class then you are one step ahead. The point is that sitting around won’t make you fit.

It’s these two simple choices that can make a difference in your life. A pill, shoes and a shake won’t do it. Even if you do experience temporary weight loss, keep in mind that it’s just that…temporary. You also don’t know what unseen things it could be doing to your body.

Fitness is more than just looking good. It’s feeling good and you feel you’re best when you are making healthy choices.
