“Do What Is Right” by Douglas J. and Laurie H. Wilcox is a guidebook to help your family to find motivation to live the gospel more fully. This is a handbook that gives 52 suggestions on activities that can help your children become motivated to participate in scripture story, service, being kind to others and chores.
Each activity comes with instructions on situations that the activity can be applied to and then explains how to execute the activity in your family. Each section ends with a story explaining how the Wilcoxes applied the activity to their family. This section is interesting because it shows how to work through the problems that may arise during the initial beginning of the activity.
One activity that is suggested is “Eye Spy” for General Conference or Sacrament talks. The children are encouraged to listen for specific topics and to record who spoke about that topic. To take it a step further you can have the children write down something new that they learned about the talk. I thought this was a great twist on the idea of Conference Bingo, because it asks more application and thought.
Several of the ideas are similar. A lot of them are for tracking goals or learning behaviors, and so a point system is implemented. However each one does have a unique twist, which allows you to find the best one for your family to follow. Additionally the authors point out that children tire of the same system after a certain amount of time and switching the theme or focus of the tracking can help children to become excited about the activities again.
This book is full of good ideas to help your family to reach your goals. The motivators can help make gospel habits become part of your family routine with a bit more ease. You will still need to have consistency in your patterns. This is a great book for the new year.
