A Review of “Midway to Heaven” by Dean Hughes

One of my favorite books by Dean Hughes is “Midway to Heaven.” This is the story of Ned Stevens, a recently retired and widowed father. His youngest daughter is about to get married. And Ned doesn’t react very well to news. Ned’s antics throughout the book are hilarious. From the moment Liz brings home a new friend, David Markham, Ned realizes that something is seriously wrong.

Ned goes to great lengths to discover what it is about David that rubs him the wrong way. He begins by checking out David’s background. He calls old friends that live in the area where David grew up. When he fails to hear any bad news, he is still convinced that something is wrong. He is threatened by David’s perfect golf game. To Ned David seems just a little bit too good. One morning Ned decides to keep up with David as he runs and nearly kills himself doing it.

Along the way there are many humorous incidents. Ned also realizes that it is time to begin dating again. He is tired of being hounded by all of the single women in his area. His near dating mishaps are just as hilarious as his interactions with David. But will Ned be able to make the changes he needs to in order to save his relationship with Liz? And will he finally be able to begin dating again?

Dean Hughes as a clean writing style. His characters have wonderful quirks that make them seem real. This story moves along quickly and keeps you reading. If you are looking for a fun book that will have you laughing the entire time you are reading it, then this is the perfect book for you. This would make a great father’s day present, since the central theme is the father daughter relationship throughout the book. If you enjoyed the “Father of the Bride” movies, you will enjoy this book as well.
