I’m not particularly fond of books written in first person, but I have to admit, Rules of Engagement would be one of the exceptions. Stephanie takes us to the world of LDS singles and the often insane courting and dating rituals which are unique to Mormons.
She launches the first salvo with a WARNING. “This book will scare you—scare you silly— that anyone could be as irrational as I am. But the fact is, maybe you need an irrational perspective. Just about everyone is irrational when it comes to the dating game, the LDS dating game to be more specific . . .” Her dialogue is crisp, although inundated with LDS colloquialisms and acronyms she pulls it off. Her storytelling style unique and worth the read.
I read the book on the plane ride to Texas, my bum knee didn’t even feel the pain. Two hours and I was laughing most of the time as she took me through shenanigans loosely based on her life. As I read about the insane lengths women will go through to not appear interested in any LDS man who will run at the first sign of interest it flashed me back to my own single days. Can’t say I miss ‘em. She’s hit the nail right on the head – she understands the battle between LDS single men and single women.
Pick up Rules of Engagement, you’ll enjoy the laugh and see why it climbed so high on the Deseret Book bestseller charts. She’s taken LDS romantic comedy to a new level.
Hey Guys! The girl is still single! I don’t think you should waste any more time.
