A Review of the Movie “The Work and the Glory”

One summer I read the majority of the series “The Work and the Glory.” I enjoyed the stories and learning more about church history than I would have otherwise done. I was excited when I heard that a movie version of the book series was about to come out. Since I do not live in Utah, I have a limited opportunity to see LDS movies until they come out on video. This review will be for the first “The Work and the Glory” movie.

The story is focused on the Steed family who moves to Palmyra, New York and begins to farm. They are introduced to the Smith family when Joseph and Hyrum Smith come to work on their farm for a short time. As the film progresses they begin to learn more about Joseph and the Book of Mormon. Each member of the family must reconcile his or her beliefs during the film. I also really enjoyed Jonathon Scarfe’s portrayal of Joseph Smith.

The scenery and the cinematography work in the film are quite good. The acting is also well done. For the most part the actors are Hollywood actors that have worked in the industry for several years. The resulting film is a very polished and enjoyable film. Through the film you can feel and see the personal conflict that each person had as they chose to accept or reject the message that was being offered to them.

The Work and the Glory American Zion” was released to DVD on May 9, 2006. I have not had the opportunity to watch it yet, but will soon. I will write a review on it in the next few weeks. These movies are a great opportunity for you to learn a little bit more about church history. Gerald Lund did extensive research in order address the story as accurately as possible.
