A Slanguage Activity From Down Under.

As a fun activity, see if you can work out what these ridiculously Australian sentences mean. I’ve left a space under each sentence so that you can rewrite the sentence in your way of speaking. Have you printed out the list of words from Aussie Slanguage? I think you’ll need it to understand what’s being said. Fair dinkum, this is fun. When you visit us in Australia, if you can understand this, she’ll be apples, mate!

1) Hey, mate! Come along to our barbie this arvo. We’ve got some chook, and some bloke’s sheila is going to cook up the snags.

2) I don’t mean to grizzle, but I was feeling pretty crook during Chrissie. There weren’t enough lollies for me! Plenty of other tucker to make me crook though.

3) Boil the billy please.

4) Matey, bring my sunnies will ya. I’m boiling the billy and cooking the Barbie. How about a snag sanger ay?

5) Righto. Which one of you little larrikins was having a sticky beak in my swag ay?

6) That roo’s gone walkabout again. He’s a fair dinkum drongo. Those bloweys are going to get him and send him troppo. He’ll end up on someone’s barbie tonight the way he’s going.

7) Nah, it’s true blue mate. I’m not being a skite. I just knocked off for smoko, real knackered like, and some rat bag had destroyed the dunny. I’m just a garbo but I reckon I fixed the dunny up, real good, like a sheila’s hair do.

8) You are so ocker. Are you from a station in the bush or the outback?

9) Crikey. She’s a little beauty.

10) Ta mate. You’re a little ripper for a Pom. Better watch those mozzies don’t carry you away though.
