A Smooth Start to the School Year

It seems kind of silly to me to start school before Labor Day. Although my daughter did get in three full days of school, my senior just had two and my youngest had one and a half. Oh, that’s another thing…those dreaded half days. But that’s another story.

So the kids got a taste of school and then immediately enjoyed three days off. And so far it looks like its going to be a good start.

I had quite a few concerns about my daughter starting high school, especially since she was coming from such a different environment. Admittedly, some things have been quite a culture shock to her. She is seeing behavior and mannerisms that she isn’t used to, including a lot more cussing and kissing. But so far she seems to be faring well.

What I find interesting is that she hasn’t really said much about school. But since I am her mom, I can tell you why that is. She doesn’t want to admit that it’s not as bad as she was predicting. It’s hard to tell your mom, “You were right.”

But I won’t gloat about it (at least not outwardly). Yes, I had my worries (as any mother would) but deep down, I knew she would enjoy some of the freedoms of high school. And it has worked out wonderfully because she eats lunch with two of her friends from church.

I don’t go into this however, thinking we won’t have issues come up. After all, this is middle and high school we are talking about. There are bound to be problems, difficulties and challenges.

I know you can try and be prepared for whatever comes your way but well, we know how that goes. Many times it is the unexpected that takes you away. So for now I am just going to enjoy the smooth start.

How has the start of school been for your children?
