The 4th of July is my favorite holiday. I just love grilling out and spending the day with family and friends.
But my favorite part is the fireworks. I was so glad when our local park decided to still have them, even though we have been experiencing a drought.
Along with all of the normal fun with the 4th of July, this year was extra special for all of us. Anything patriotic tends to stir our hearts because of the fact that my oldest son is getting ready to leave for the Air Force.
We proudly displayed the new Air Force flag we purchased. But now it’s down and tucked inside the closet. The next time it goes up will be the day my son leaves and it will likely stay up until he returns.
I think one of the things my son has especially come to appreciate is the respect and honor given to those in the military. Just a couple of weeks ago when we attended his friend’s graduation, he was wearing his Air Force shirt and a couple of older gentlemen stopped to talk to him.
They commended him for joining the military. It really helped him feel greater pride for what he is doing.
Then on the 4th of July he got to experience a special treat. He spent the first part of the day with his cousin, who sings in a band. The band performed at a local area park.
I found out later from my sister that at the end, someone made an announcement about my son leaving for the Air Force. He was told to stand up and was thanked for his willingness to serve our country. It ended with his cousin singing, “God Bless the USA.”
It was apparently a very touching scene, one that I wish I could have witnessed myself. But as my son told me about it later on, I could see the pride in his face.
As he sat next to me Wednesday night, with the fireworks blazing in the sky, my heart felt so full. It’s amazing the contentment and peace that has overtaken me since his decision to join.
The 4th of July suddenly has new meaning for me. It has given me a greater awareness of the price that has been paid for our freedom.
Never take it for granted. And please, if you see a soldier, thank them for their service to this country.
