A Trip to Deep-Fried Heaven

For deep-fried food fans, sinking their teeth into a Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger is about as close to Heaven, as one can get.

Scratch that.

Add a couple pieces of chocolate-covered bacon to the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger… now that’s Heaven on Earth… or a heart attack waiting to happen.

If you missed out on trying the one-of-a-kind hamburger, topped with melted cheese and squished in between an extra-large Krispy Kreme glazed donut, at the Wisconsin State Fair earlier this month, then hold onto your arteries because the State Fair of Texas is just around the corner.

The annual fried food festival (which also features live entertainment and a mighty fine midway) kicks off next month. The fair runs from September 24th through October 17th, and according to event planners, this year’s fair will deep-fry your taste buds like never before.

The State Fair of Texas is always on the cutting edge of the deep-fried food world, offering such gastronomical treats, such as deep-fried Coca-Cola and deep-fried frozen margaritas.

This year fair officials say they plan to unveil a litany of new fried favorites, including: Deep–fried beer-filled pretzel pockets, deep-fried s’mores, deep-fried Pop-Tarts, deep-fried club salads, deep-fried chocolate bars, deep-fried lemonade, deep-fried caviar that features black-eyed peas, and a deep-fried Frito pie, with chili and corn chips.

If you survive the deep-fried fest you can wash it down with a slice of fresh (not fried) watermelon. Yes, the State Fair of Texas actually does offer non-fried food options, though finding them is somewhat of a challenge.

Here in Wisconsin, we batter and deep-fry even the healthiest of foods, including strawberries, pickles, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini and onions. You can even chow down on deep-fried pork chop sandwiches complete with not-so original French fries.

I like the monster cream puffs myself. I just wonder how long it will be before they batter up those babies and dunk them into a deep fryer?
