I mentioned in another blog that I like making candies at Christmas time. I mostly make fudge, however, believe it or not my most requested recipes have nothing to do with candies but rather with cleverly put together ingredients.
I suppose it’s the salty and sweet combination that make my covered pretzels so popular. I do different things every year but thought I’d share a few of my ideas. This year, I am sure to include a new recipe I found from Family Fun magazine as well!
Family Fun’s Chocolate Pretzel Bites
You will need:
waffle shaped pretzels
Hershey’s kisses and Hershey’s hugs
bag of red and green M & M’s
Directions:
Heat the oven to about 170 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper. Layer the pretzels in a single layer on the cookie sheet. Top each pretzel with one unwrapped Hershey’s hugs or kiss. Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes. . .until the chocolate is soft and you could pat it down with a wooden spoon. Take them out of the oven and quickly press an M & M into the center of the chocolate.
Valorie’s Turtle Pretzel Sticks
“Turtle” in a dessert usually means something with chocolate, caramel and pecans. These loaded pretzel sticks are rich, but super delicious.
You will need:
Large pretzel rods (this recipe does not work as well with small sticks)
1 package of milk chocolate for melting (you can use squares or chocolate chips. . .doesn’t matter)
4 tablespoons of butter
1 jar of caramel ice cream topping
finely chopped pecans (you can chop them up yourself to get them to a smaller consistency.
Directions:
Prepare a baking sheet (or two) by covering it with waxed paper.
In a large microwave safe jar, melt the butter until it is boiling, about 45 seconds. Immediately remove from heat and slowly stir in the chocolate chips. If you have to, you can microwave them in 10 second intervals to finish melting the chocolate.
Dip the pretzel rods in the chocolate. I like to cover the rods, using a plastic knife, but leave some pretzel showing on the end so they’re easier to pick up and eat. Place the covered pretzels on the baking sheet and chill for a few hours. . .until the chocolate is solid.
Once the chocolate is set, use a spoon to spread the rods with caramel sauce. Cover immediately with finely chopped pecans. You can serve immediately or package them to give as gifts.
