While making wool gloves for my husband, I was inspired to make a pair of matching wool gloves for my son. When the first miniature glove was complete, I tried it on my sleeping son only to discover that it is quite impossible to effectively put gloves on a sleeping toddler. The next morning I had my son try on the glove and he did not like it. I guess I should have made mittens for him instead, but with one day left until Christmas morning, I decided to save that task for next year (whereby I would have more time to find some fun more kid friendly wool or cotton yarn). So we turned the little glove into an ornament to adorn the small Christmas tree that is in our children’s room (perhaps we will turn their Christmas tree into a new tradition; a glove tree!). As it turns out he does enjoy playing with the knitted glove even if we refuses to wear it (he is not a fan of the fingers)! I needed something else to have wrapped under the tree for my son and since I seemed to be on a roll making things, I found myself folding, quite precisely, one hundred Christmas themed catalog pages into paper airplanes. The old shoe box wrapped in butcher paper was stuffed!
The next frugal gift on my list of things to make, was a knitted garter hat for my daughter. She is not the biggest fan of wearing anything on her head, but with our current wave of frigid temperatures, she needs to have something warm covering her head and ears! I chose a cream toned organic cotton yarn which was also on sale making it a great choice for a hat! I thought about knitting her a cardigan but decided that such an involved knitwear piece needed more than a week for trial and error knitting…
