A Wedding Treasure Chest

With the number of second and third marriages today, many couples start off married life with more than enough household things. This means they are hard to buy for when it comes to wedding gifts.

Given the number of couples who are living together before they are married and who have been out flatting for years on their own, these couples may also have an abundance of homewares.

Some couples instead of getting duplicates of things they already have, have elected instead to have a wishing well where people can donate money instead. While it may sound calculated and mercenary to some people, to others it is simply a practical solution instead of dealing with the problem of getting a lot of unwanted and unnecessary gifts.

From the point of view of guests it takes the pressure of trying to buy something the couple wants and knowing their taste or going through a gift register process. The only consideration then is how much to put in the wishing well.

One couple did a variation of the wishing well idea and called it a treasure chest. Along with invites to the wedding they send out a lighthearted verse announcing that instead of guests buying gifts since they already had most everything (Yes this was a second marriage) and that there would be a treasure chest at the wedding.

Of course, there will be those who choose to ignore the request and will simply go and buy a gift anyway. Some people gave the couple vouchers for things like $200 worth of gas or something similar. But the majority of people fell in with their wishes. The result was they received thousands of dollars in their treasure chest to put towards moving house, a holiday or whatever large item they needed.

It may not be romantic but imagine what several thousand dollars could mean to a young couple wanting to buy their own home. I confess I’ve never been to a wedding that had the wishing well or treasure chest idea. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts about this.
