No form of mental health problem is anything that any person would wish upon themselves. Apart from the emotional pain, there is the continued stigma of mental illness and the ongoing refusal by some individuals to understand that those suffering from any sort of mental illness cannot just “snap out of it”.
Sometimes, due to the seriousness of a mental health issue, hospitalization becomes necessary. What many people do not recognize is that more beds are occupied by mental health patients than by patients suffering from a physical illness. This is a startling fact as it emphasizes just how many people that we interact with on a regular basis are actually suffering at any given time from a clinical level of mental illness.
But what happens when the sanctuary you go to in order to recover from your illness becomes a place of even more horror? There are no shortages of stories of patients in mental hospitals being bashed, raped, insulted, strip searched, given incorrect medication and in some cases, bashed to death.
When one is mentally ill, one needs to be really on the ball to survive in some of the hospitals in many countries around the world. Private clinics do not offer any safety from abuse from nursing staff either and this has always been a major problem for those suffering from emotional disorders. Yet most are too frightened to speak out because, for one reason, they are too sick to face an enquiry and two, they know they may have to return to the hospital facility at a later date and the type of nursing staff who will molest a sedated patient is not likely to welcome back a patient who put in a report about them.
So the entire issue goes underground.
