When you get called as a president of an organization in the church, it can be very intimidating. Thoughts can swirl through your brain like, “How can I do it all?” and “What if I’m not good enough?” But, entertaining those thoughts are just one way of letting the adversary win. So, start by trying your best to push out the negative, and let in the positive.
The best way to start doing that is through prayer. Heavenly Father has given you this calling for a reason. Maybe you don’t know what that reason is yet, and maybe you won’t know for years, but regardless, there is a reason.
One thing I was thinking about the other day is how most often, we receive callings in the church, and are not yet set apart before we are asked to do something. One example of this is choosing counselors for an organization. When you are called to be the President, you are usually not set apart before you have to prayerfully decide who your counselors will be. This alone can be an overwhelming task for a President. I remember when I was called to be the President in the YW organization. I felt like I was just barely out of YW myself. However, the most intimidating part of it all, at least in the beginning, was choosing who would be my right and left hand ladies! I wanted people that would be there for me, and guide me, and be as excited about the calling as I was.
They key to almost everything in the church is prayer. And, it is no different in callings. We have to start praying for guidance the moment the Bishop asks us to fulfill a roll. Maybe we need to pray to accept that this calling is right for us, or pray that we can make good decisions on counselors. Whatever the job is, we need to pray. Even if you are asked to do something that you think doesn’t require much prayer, think again. Every job in the church could use the added guidance of the Holy Ghost.
