Accepting Chronic Illness

Everyone has trials and struggles in their lives. Some are more easily seen than others. It can be difficult to accept that trials do happen and to be able to move forward from those realizations. One trial that may be exceptionally difficult to deal with is accepting and dealing with having a chronic illness. This can be difficult as the disease progresses and limits that ways that you can help and reach out to others. I have observed a few people with chronic illnesses and their acceptance and optimism has really blessed my life.

The first thing that stood out to me is that they choose not to focus on the burden that they are carrying. These people look for ways to help others when and how they can. They are always looking for the positive in life. They also look at each day as a gift from Heavenly Father.

It is important to realize that some things are out of our control. It can be difficult and frustrating to know that you cannot change the condition. You may simply have to adapt to the limitations that your condition gives you. It is also important to stop focusing on the things that you cannot do and focus on the ways that you can help others.

There are times when you need to allow others to help you. This is a blessing to others because it does give them the opportunity to serve. Although this may be difficult, it is important to find the peace with where you are right now. The Lord can help you to find this as you ask for His help.

Your outlook on life will improve as you strive to remain close to the Lord. Take time to pray and study the scriptures each day. Attend the temple as often you can. Continue to attend your church meetings if you can, and if you can’t arrange to have the sacrament brought to you each week.
