It’s a fact that when you are execising regularly that you may experience an injury. I’ve strained my foot, my leg, my arm and even my back (although admittedly the back strain came from moving heavy wood furniture up stairs and not from a workout). But the point is, you can hurt yourself and you need to know how to cope with injuries and the like in order to recover and prevent further injury or strain.
The treatment for the most common injuries you may sustain while working out is RICE. RICE refers to Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Contrary to popular belief, if you strain a leg muscle, you don’t want to walk it off. You want to rest the area, put ice and compression on it and elevate the area as much as possible.
When you employ RICE for the 48 hours after an injury, you are going to be more likely to recover and heal up faster. If the injury is more than a strain or you feel that you have really hurt yourself, you should consult a physician.
Injuries Can Nag At You
Several years ago, I had my foot crushed. I wore canvas shoes to the barn and my horse stepped on my foot. I wasn’t planning to be out in the field, hence the canvas shoes, but there was a problem with a fence and I went to fix it. Long story short, my foot hurt miserably. A crush does not necessarily result in broken bones. But the severe compression and weight pressure created massive amounts of bruising and pain.
I employed RICE and saw the doctor the next day. The doctor recommended that I continue with the RICE treatment. I kept the foot on ice for about 20 minutes of every hour. Whenever I was sitting, the foot was elevated. I also used an ace bandage to support the area when I had to walk.
I took it easy for about five days, by the fifth day the swelling was all but gone. There was still visible to the eye bruising, but the majority of the pain was gone. I was able to use my riding boots and do some riding. After an hour in the saddle and an hour of work at the barn, I went home and used RICE again. A week later, you couldn’t tell I’d had the accident at all.,
RICE can mean the difference between healing correctly and swiftly and spending weeks nigh on months with a nagging injury. Have you ever had to cope with a nagging injury?
