Yesterday we had a great activity. The girls loved it, it was a calm, quiet activity (which I love!) and we sat around the table and just talked while we worked.
In the January 2011 Friend this month, they had a highlight about an activity day group in Massachusetts. It was titled, “Little Women from Massachusetts”.
These girls had the chance to visit the home of Louisa May Alcott, and learn about keeping journals. This is a great lesson for any youth to learn at a young age. During this activity, they made journal jars. So, that is what we decided to do for our activity as well.
The idea behind a journal jar is for the girls to have a pre-written prompt on a piece of paper that they can pull out everyday to help them think of things to write about in their journal that are meaningful.
I got simple mason jars that have the separate lid and ring. We had some fabric that we used to cover the lid leaving the ring bare. We just hot glued the fabric to the lid. Next, I had this quote printed for them:
“Preserve your memories, Seal them up well.
What you forget, You can never retell.
But a journal that’s kept fresh on the shelf,
Will help someone through rough times,
Maybe even yourself.”
I matted it with cute colored paper, and hot glued it to the side of the jars for them.
As we wrote down questions for them to put in their jars, we did so on different colored cardstock so that when you look at the jar, it is filled with cute, brightly colored papers. Last, we tied a ribbon around the jar.
That was pretty much it. The girls had fun thinking up questions to ask themselves, and it took up the whole time. We had a little treat after. All of my girls keep journals already, but this is a fun way to help them make journaling a little sweeter.
